SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE

Gretta Pecl is a Professor of marine ecology at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), and the Director of the Centre for Marine Socioecology (CMS) at UTAS. She has a with specific expertise in how climate change is resulting in the climate-driven redistribution of life on earth, and she leads several national and international efforts to better understand climate-driven changes to species distributions, including the National multi award-winning citizen science initiative Redmap Australia and the Species on the Move international conference series. She is a Lead Author for the IPCC AR6 report, and has a strong passion for science communication and engagement with the public. Gretta is ranked in the top 200 most influential climate scientists in the world (and the top 20 women).

Kathy is a Senior Adviser with Biosecurity New Zealand, a position she has held since 2009.  She has led marine biosecurity responses to incursions of invasive species, such as Mediterranean fanworm (Sabella spallanzanii).  Previously, she led the national marine reserve program for the New Zealand Department of Conservation and a large ecosystem based management program in Fiji, for the international NGO, Wildlife Conservation Society.  Kathy is currently the Immediate Past President of the NZMSS.

Judi is a statistical marine ecologist who has worked in both a government research centre and a university. Much of her research has been in coastal and estuarine systems, studying disturbance, recovery, ecosystem health and cumulative effects. She also has expertise in measuring biodiversity (species, functional traits and habitats), analysis of spatial and temporal variability in populations and communities, and design and implementation of ecological monitoring programmes and risk assessments.

Robert is a postdoctoral researcher in coral reef ecology. His background lies in studying the spatial ecology of fishes (Where do they live, or eat?) and in reconsidering the underlying concepts of functional ecology (What is a function? What is a functional trait?). His recent work is attempting to use such ecological concepts to understand prevalent scientific narratives and human dynamics in modern coral reef conservation strategies.

Dr Alicia Sutton is a Director and Principal Marine Scientist at Carijoa Marine Consulting based in Perth. Alicia collaborates with other marine consultancies, government agencies, and leading marine research institutions on a range of projects involving strategic planning, data collection and analysis, literature reviews, risk assessments and conservation action planning. Alicia is currently the National Vice President of AMSA.
